Let's shape the Future
On 13 November 2018, Vetropack Management announced the construction of the new glassworks in Boffalora sopra Ticino (Mi). The purchase of this plot of land, which is larger than the current site in Trezzano sul Naviglio, will allow Vetropack Italia to respond to the ever-growing demand for its products and meet increasingly stringent quality requirements. Thanks to its cutting edge technology, the project for the new glassworks will improve production efficiency and at the same time provide innovation while safeguarding all the new sustainability objectives.
This project encapsulates the Vetropack Group's vision and it is also consistent with the statements already made in the Integrated Annual Report 2020. In fact, the company aims to become a leader in the sector by implementing production that is as environmentally friendly as possible. The main indicator is the CO2 emissions per ton of glass produced, which will be reduced by 30% by 2030 compared to 2019.
The new glassworks was also conceived with the aim of completely fitting in with the local environment and territory. As part of the Ticino Park, the area is subject to floral-fauna and environmental protection. The presence of the Naviglio Grande has also introduced requirements to protect the environment and water, leading the architectural project to be conceived in full collaboration with the competent authorities. The result is a site that blends into the landscape, re-proposing colours and perspective matrices and covering about half of the current land area of about 347,000 m2.

Reclaiming an existing industrial site is a complicated process involving several authorities and it certainly represents a sustainable approach, in line with the "Clearly sustainable" strategic initiative, a pillar of the Vetropack Group's Strategy 2030.

The Boffalora sopra Ticino production site originates from a substantial plan of demolition of pre-existing buildings and ruins making it possible to reclaim an extensive area already connected to the national electricity and methane gas distribution network.
A plot of land of approximately 31,000 m2 opposite the Naviglio Grande canal will be transformed into a public green park with native flora and fauna plantations, also accessible by means of a 2.5 km cycle/pedestrian path. One of the old buildings inside the complex will also be renovated and handed over to the Municipality as an Infopoint.
Lastly, so as not to overload the existing roadway, a modification of the current SP225 road layout is planned, followed by the construction of a service road as well as a public car park and lorry park.

People are the heart of the company! The promise was kept to find a site that wasn’t more than “25” - the maximum distance in kilometres and minutes - from the current Trezzano sul Naviglio plant. Its location is therefore considered strategic not only for transport but above all to ensure that jobs are maintained. All employees will be able to continue working at Vetropack Italia, enrich their professionalism and skills by means of training programmes already in place.

The site will fully embrace the Regional Resolution initiative concerning land consumption, favouring the reclamation of a post-industrial area over the occupation of new land for agricultural use. For this reason, an extensive environmental investigation plan of the subsoil and a consequent reclamation plan were made which allowed the territory to remove severe environmental liabilities and disposal of several thousand square metres of asbestos roofing.
The secondary material generated by the demolition and disintegration of the pre-existing buildings will be re-used in the construction phase, and vegetation will be replanted around the area.
The glassworks is also designed to have the lowest day/night noise emission level and emissions treatment engineering systems aimed at greatly reducing atmospheric emissions. Lastly, a drastic reduction will be made in water consumption in the process phases, extending the use of internal recovery and recycling plants.
